HOMEROOM PARENTS

About

Homeroom parent volunteers are so important for our classrooms!

Additional Information is available on the Homeroom Teacher blog. Each teacher is paired with a staff member in the school. Teacher/staff paring, birthday and favorite things wish lists, and sample emails are available here: http://carawayhomeroomparents.blogspot.com

How Homeroom Parents Contribute

Our kids and our teachers love to have homeroom parents to help in these areas:

 - Communication - The homeroom parent helps with forwarding emails to the classroom families from the Homeroom Parent Coordinator. These emails usually relate to school wide events or PTA events and programs. Usually one person is the "lead" on the team and is responsible for forwarding these communications in a timely manner.

 - Classroom Party planning - The homeroom parents work with their teacher to plan and organize the winter party. The homeroom parents then communicate the plan to the rest of the classroom parents to ask for assistance in executing the party plan, either through providing parent volunteers and/or supplies for the party.

There are usually three classroom parties throughout the year.

  • Winter party - A seasonal, non-specific holiday, celebrated on the last school day before winter break.
  • Valentine's Day party - A fun, friendship oriented party.
  • End of Year party - A celebration of the end of the school year for the classroom.

 - Festive Fridays - Six times a year our teachers and staff are treated to a themed pot luck lunch. Our teachers and staff look forward to these festive feasts! Each grade is assigned one of these festive Fridays. For example, 5th grade may be in charge of the September Festive Friday. The hospitality team schedules these days and usually assigns the theme. The hospitality committee and the homeroom parents for that grade work together to create a sign up genius and communicate the information to the whole grade.

 - Teacher and adopted staff member gifts - Homeroom parents coordinate the collection of funds for two teacher gifts - one at the winter party and one at the end of year party. These collections are completely option and should be collected for separately.

 - Teacher and adopted staff member birthdays - Homeroom parents should inform the classroom of the birthdays for their teacher and adopted staff member. The goal is to acknowledge and appreciate the teacher and staff member on their birthday, not to provide gifts. Kids may bring cards, flowers, or gifts on their own, but a classroom gift is not given. A homeroom parent can offer to bring a treat for the kids and teacher to enjoy together, similar to when a child has a birthday in the classroom. Or a homeroom parent can offer to bring the teacher lunch or a coffee. These are small tokens of appreciation that can be done if someone on the homeroom parent team wishes to do them.

 - Teacher Appreciation - Teacher appreciation week is organized and coordinated by our amazing PTA hospitality committee. The homeroom parent team should forward communication from the hospitality committee to their classrooms. This gives every family the opportunity to participate in Teacher Appreciation week.
